Some employers use CV scanners or scanning software to digitally eliminate unsuitable contenders, while others still use humans who dedicate less than twenty seconds to reading each CV/Résumé.

Here are my top tips for beating the ATS scanner – Simple formatting is CRUCIAL, don’t use multiple columns or other weird formatting – Your CV/Résumé must be a Word doc, not PDF – Include key words in a sensible way, don’t resort to tricks like teeny tiny fonts or white text on a white background, that’s just silly nonsense

Simple and easy to read – this is the recurring message I hear from HR personnel, hiring managers, recruiters and business owners when they talk about CV/Résumés. Regardless of the country or the industry – the principles are ALWAYS the same.

Have you been applying for job after job with no interviews? It can really start to wear you down and eventually you begin to believe you are unemployable. But what if I told you it’s your CV / Résumé that’s the problem?

There is a misconception about the job application process, which results in lost opportunities for many job seekers. You are only given an average of twenty seconds to grab the reader’s attention. You want to believe the HR personnel are sitting quietly at their desks, surrounded by doves and unicorns, while the soft sound of harp music wafts calmly through the air.

Make sure you have somewhere to work. Don’t make this space in your bedroom, if you can possibly help it. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary. Make your space somewhere you want to be – When you work, that’s where you sit,  otherwise the entire house can end up looking and feeling like work. Even if it’s just a tiny desk in the corner, make it yours with photos on the wall, your favourite mug, music or whatever else you need to feel productive.

I have been writing international CVs for ten years, initially focusing on Australia, then branching out to New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, UAE, USA, UK and many other parts of the world.

There is nothing more frustrating when you advertise a position, to have to go through hundreds of résumés. As an HR Generalist, I just do not have the time. They say it takes a recruiter on average only 6 seconds to look at a résumé. That is true

Profiles with photos are up to fourteen times more likely to be viewed by potential employers or recruiters than faceless profiles. This should be reason enough to ensure you upload a profile photo featuring only yourself.

A CV should be a profile of who you are – your skills, your education, and your work experience. It’s not a design portfolio or a dating profile. There’s a standard and traditional CV layout for a reason. It’s easy to scan and an employer can see at a glance what they need to know – they don’t have to go searching through your designer CV to find out what your qualification is or where you’ve worked.
