This week, Prevania’s Feedback on Friday is a great example of my process. With a lot of customers, we know there’s gold in their work history, but sometimes it’s not clearly displayed on their CV. All their relevant and interesting experience is shrouded in rambling sentences. They may have buried the most important information on page 5 of their current CV. We can find so many small issues, any one of which could cause a recruiter to overlook you. That’s where I step in to

Decorate your body, not your CV! Your CV is not a work of art and should not be decorated. That means no illustrations, no fancy borders. Keep the coloured ink away. Stick to black and white only. Basically, no fussy stuff that will confuse CV scanning software, or make your potential employer cringe as they put your CV into the ‘no’ pile (before even reading it).

They don’t really need to know what primary school you went to, or how many scout badges you got! Your work history only needs to cover the last fifteen years

Some employers use CV scanners or scanning software to digitally eliminate unsuitable contenders, while others still use humans who dedicate less than twenty seconds to reading each CV/Résumé.

Here are my top tips for beating the ATS scanner – Simple formatting is CRUCIAL, don’t use multiple columns or other weird formatting – Your CV/Résumé must be a Word doc, not PDF – Include key words in a sensible way, don’t resort to tricks like teeny tiny fonts or white text on a white background, that’s just silly nonsense

Simple and easy to read – this is the recurring message I hear from HR personnel, hiring managers, recruiters and business owners when they talk about CV/Résumés. Regardless of the country or the industry – the principles are ALWAYS the same.
