I've Been Fired!

Practical Advice for Bouncing Back and Landing Your Next Role After You've Been Fired.

Job loss, especially when sudden or surrounded by controversy, can feel like a seismic shock to your sense of self and your career trajectory. Whether it was your mistake or circumstances outside your control, you can be sure many jobseekers have found themselves in similar situations and have gone on to thrive. The key is not to dwell on the setback, but to channel your energy into recovery and growth.

No judgement, just a new CV

 1. Allow Yourself Time to Process

Acknowledge the emotions that come with being fired including anger, shame, fear and grief. Give yourself space to process what happened but resist the urge to define yourself by this one experience. Reach out to supportive friends, family or mental health professional if you need support to work through your feelings.

2. Don’t Dwell on the Past

One of the most practical steps you can take, is to update your CV. You are not obligated to include referees from your most recent employer, especially if the circumstances of your departure were less than ideal. Focus on your achievements, skills and the value you bring to the employer. Reframe gaps or transitions in your work history honestly but succinctly, there’s no need to go into detail.

This is where I can truly make a difference to your applications, using my 16 years of international CV and résumé writing experience.

3. Build a New Narrative

Prepare for how you’ll address your last role in interviews. Keep it professional and brief. If asked about your departure, focus on what you learned and how it’s motivated you to grow. Remember, you can recover and move forward, even if the incident was your fault. Employers value honesty, resilience and self-awareness. One tip is never give information in an interview that wasn’t requested. Only answer what you are asked, don’t provide additional information.

4. Build the Tools to Open Doors

Consider upskilling or taking a short course to boost your confidence and CV. Online and in-person networking such as LinkedIn and Facebook groups can also open unexpected doors.

Arm yourself with a polished, up-to-date CV and a tailored cover letter for each application, made by our resident CV specialist, Roz Fisher.
